The attraction of Grindon is its proximity to open countryside to the west and Sunderland to the ease. Additionally, south of Sunderland are many spectacular beaches — just perfect for a day out.
Near Grindon, the popular Herrington Country Park with its paths and lake is a popular place to relax on warm weekends. Also, Lakeside Park in Sunderland has a skate park, ski slope, lake, athletic club and tennis club.
Most pubs, restaurants, and cafes are situated on the A183 Chester Road that joins Grindon to the city centre. Of course, Sunderland is home to fantastic attractions, and there is always something going on. There you will find all the top high street stores, as well as boutiques and high-end designer shops.
An advantage of living in the Grindon area of Sunderland is that you are on the city’s peripheral. The suburb is at the corner where the A183 joins the A19, meaning that seaside towns such as South Shields, Whitley Bay, and Seaham are only a short drive away. However, suppose you want to travel further afield. In that case, the Nothhumbria National Park, Pennines, and Yorkshire Dales are not too far away.
In addition, there are plenty of attractions in Sunderland, such as the National Glass Centre, Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden, or the nearby Ryhope Engines Museum. For football lovers, the Stadium of Light is home to Sunderland A.F.C.
There’s and excellent range of amenities available where residents can shop, for example there’s a Greggs, Costa and KFC close by and a Nisa Local and Costcutter for everyday goods. For larger spends such as shopping for clothes, electrical goods, or supermarkets, then Sunderland has plenty to offer. For example, there is the Bridges Shopping Centre which is 15 minutes by car and the Metrocentre, which is 7 minutes by car. Or the extensive Hylton Riverside Retail Park is a 10-minute drive along the A19.
Grindon has several primary schools that are highly rated by Ofstead, including Broadway Junior School. For secondary school pupils, there is Hasting Hill Academy which has a “good” rating.
Grindon residents also enjoy an excellent bus service, with frequent connections to the centre of Sunderland. Communing time takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. From the Sunderland train station, hourly journeys take 20 minutes to connect to Newcastle Central Station. From there, it’s easy to get onward connections along the east coast rail route and to Newcastle International Airport. Newcastle is also a 25-minute journey by car, whilst Durham City Centre is just 22 minutes.
